1.
Cruisin Buddies Car Club in Binghamton,
New York is just simply... the little club
that could. Could what, you wildly wonder?
Could envision a car club that would include
anyone who enjoys looking, driving, owning,
or dreaming about any kind of vehicle. Could
raise money, food, and warm clothing for
charity. Could whip up enthusiasm from all
walks of life to form a hard working, fun
loving team that blossomed into a club.
Could dream of becoming bigger and better
with each passing year. "If only we
could" became a dream with no boundaries
and grew into "When We Could".

2.
After many years of admiring
and participating in other car club's
events - traveling from one state to another
- all phases of parades, club cruise ins
and shows were participated in and observed.
Many award and trophys were won as ideas
were stored away for someday - when they
could... start a club of their own. They
watched for bigger and better banners,
advertising techniques, parking strategies,
how cars were classed and parked, what
kind of awards and trophys were given
out, and most of all - what kind of cars
belonged to which clubs. Street rods,
antiques, custom, classics, all rumbled,
purred, and roared before their eyes.
Every one a true treasure - every one
a valued gem to be included in their club
- if only they could! The gleam of the
highly polished cars mirrored the twinkle
in their eyes as they said "Of course
we could". Could, would.... And did.
"When We Could" became a reality
when the dreams of just two people (who
were the original cruisin buddies) gave
birth to Cruisin Buddies Car Club in April
of 2001.

3. As the fledgling Cruisin
Buddies are now starting to coordinate
their own parades, cruise ins and shows
to raise funds for rotating charities,
they proudly display cars from all classes
and periods. From T-Buckets to Lincolns.
From Subaru to Cadillac. Club members
car range in year from 1933 to 1972. Members
also include those who do not own any
car! Enthusiasm and love of the vehicles
is just as welcome as a set of wheels.
Of course, they look a little funny in
a parade but generate enormous stamina
keeping up with all of the club cars!

4. This unique blend of members
and cars has blessed us with a variety of
personalities and talents. It seems whatever
one member can dream up - another member
in the club knows how to do it, where to
get, how to make it, or who to contact.
Some of the most notable characters are
our club officers: President, Slick Nick,
and Vice President, Big Dog Al who are the
original founders and Cruisin Buddies dreamers.
Always available to lend a hand, and featured
in our club newsletter advice column, are
Gabe the Gear, Pappa Joe, Dr. Ruthless,
Prima Donna, Bronco Billy, and Lug Nut Larry,
just to name a few. With the assistance
of all our members, our President began
to dream of our first memorable cruise.
On we raced into our first exciting dream
on October 11, 2001.

5.
The club wanted this to be a memorable
event, so it was naturally named "The
Downtown Memory Cruise." As a first
time event for the club we decided to
cruise our cars from Johnson City, New
York to the main street of Binghamton,
New York, a distance of about 5 miles.
Fast and furious, the details were pulled
together in just 48 hours. Sometimes it
is good not to know what you are getting
into! Permits and people flew in all directions!
A couple of streets were arranged to be
closed off for the evening to park the
50 cars we expected. 50's Music and speakers
were wired from street lamps so people
were able to dance in the streets. Permissions
were given, door prizes were donated,
awards were decided upon, and cars were
washed and waxed to a dazzling finish.
Hundreds of flyers were printed and distributed.
Enthusiasm ran rampant as everyone spread
the word. Cruisin Buddies was going to
have their first real cruise to raise
funds for the Association of Retarded
Citizens and sponsor a coat drive for
those in need.

6.
Finally....our big day arrived. Meticously,
arrangements were made for half the crew
to be at the starting point, and half the
crew to be placed at the event site at the
end of the cruise. Club members would be
communicating via their radios as the cruise
got close to the destination to orderly
park the cars. Cars began to congregate
at Home Depot in Johnson City just as dusk
gently settled over the parking lot. Club
members waiting in downtown Binghamton,
anxiously clutched their radios, chafing
for some sign of the first headlights as
darkness closed in on the main drag. Oh
the anticipation! Minutes crawled by before
the first headlights appeared and the radio
sqwaked "We're almost there."
Cars were parked and packed at a furious
rate with no end in sight, filling fast
all the available street parking. Sweat
broke out as a semi tractor rolled down
the main drag. That truck is in the cruise?
No its not. Looks like it is....but, it
can't be. Oh my, it really is! What should
we do with it? Parking is getting tight.
Just then - the radio blurted "that
semi marks the halfway point". All
members were astonished, delighted and almost
panicked with such heady news. Additional
streets were hastily arranged for and the
process gleefully continued. When the dust
finally settled, the count totalled 308
vehicles participating in our first cruise
in! Over $1500 and 300 coats were donated
to charity! |

7. Of all the things that Cruisin
Buddies could do - the little club that
could, couldn't stay little for long. In
just 9 short months, Cruisin Buddies has
grown from 2 member to over 40. Each week
at least one more car enthusiast joins the
ranks of those who just love their cars
and wants to contribute an idea to make
the dream bigger. Such teamwork and enthusiasm
has just whet our appetites for bigger and
better events for the upcoming years. We
are planning monthly cruise ins for May
through September in downtown Binghamton
again. We are also planning a Campin Cruisin
Weekend to Twin Island Camp Grounds in Roscoe,
New York for the weekend of June 7,8, and
9, 2002. |
