In
a sea of classics, customs, restorations
in the field at the Orange County
Fairgrounds' 4th Annual Cruisin
for a Cure there was this wicked
blueviolet and coral '35 Ford cabriolet.
As I stopped and talked with Bill
Harrel about his car I learned of
some pretty extraordinary features.
With out airbags this in the weeds
convertable has skid plates to "slide
and spark" over the bumps.
He even shared this pic taken at
a recent Monterrey roadster show. |

The
top is made of aluminum and comes
off quite easily. Above you see
him cruisin the show with the
top off. Gary Moore built this
car in Florida and won several
awards including a PPG award.
He has driven this car back and
forth from Florida a couple of
times. The paint is an off-the-shelf
PPG Purple. It was a handy choice
when Bill rubbed the running boards
a while back. Bill has owned the
car since 2000 and has logged
32K miles. Yep it's a driver not
a trailer queen.
Notice
the lights under the hood. They
glow purple through the cowl holes.
Also notice the wolf whistle.
Bill got a blister pullin the
horn while cruisin around Big
Bear Lake at a recent rodding
event.

Do
the cowl vents look familiar.
Yep, they are 1959 VW tail light
bezels turned sideways. They look
great and are functional too allowing
the small block chevy breathe.
Gary
hand made the V8 symbol from some
round steel stock and hand hammered
piece of flat iron. The wings
of the V match up with the chrome
lines on the cowl, also from a
VW. The headlight buckets house
motorcycle headlamps.
