Shop Tour Continued: Page Four
Boyd Coddinton's Hot Rod Shop

The next stop on this Shop Tour is Boyd Coddington's Hot Rod Shop the home to Discovery Channels' American Hot Rod. Just 'cause I watch the show, doesn't necessarily mean I am a big fan. As for all these programs, this is the one I dislike the most. Boyd is trying too hard to be like OCC's Paul Sr. on American Chopper. He is a much nicer guy than he appears on the TV show. I was glad that Duane was available to talk. I always found him to be the most real on the show. Duane has been with Boyd since 1985 through thick and thin. Any impact from the show to the shop? The show consumes his whole shop for 8 weeks at a time. When they are working on a show vehicle, the work on their client cars slows down a bit. And if the producers are shooting two episodes after another, then it is 16 weeks of slow production. He is looking to build another crew for their client cars.

That is another point that most of the shops have as a challenge. Where to find good quality craftsmen. The schools are spittin' out a bunch of metal bangers, but not good mechanics.

We were there to see the finishing touches to a special Corvette, and they were just starting the Bud-Light Roadster project. Duane gave us a tour of the shop and it was really cool to see the faces of the guys from the show. They were making a whole bunch of rims. We saw the process of heating the rim to insert the center. Also he showed us the new spray booth. Charlie should be proud of that. So, what else is new in the shop? They now offer the Boydster III body in Fiberglass as well as a new line of wheels. If you are in the La Habra area, be sure to check out their open house on the second Saturday of each month.

Their showroom has these goofy red windows that cast a wierd light on the cars.
All the cars are for sale in the showroom. This Mustang was an American Hot Rod show car that just aired.
